Having to spend time with family members you barely speak to all year, packing only tight jeans, going back for a third piece of pie anyway...there's enough to regret over holiday season without skin freak-outs, too.
Things that are delicious have a way of messing with your skin: "Drinking more alcohol or eating more salty or sugary foods can make your skin dry and inflamed," says Francesca Fusco, a dermatologist in New York City. And skin that's dry and inflamed is (awesomely) more prone to pimples and breakouts. "That's common around the holidays," says Fusco. Add stress to the mix of dry skin, alcohol and sweets and you’re headed for breakouts on your face and body.
You can weigh the annoyance of a pimple against the deliciousness of pie, but let's be honest: Pie wins every time. So instead of holding back too much, just try to counteract the effects of all of that holiday bingeing on your skin. Dermatologists suggest being really diligent about moisturizing (which calms the inflammation and dryness) and using a hydrating mask for face for five to ten minutes before putting on your usual moisturizer. Skip anti-agers, like retinol, for a few days if your skin is temperamental. Also cleanse with a gentle body wash like Smiling Beads Body Wash , it contains Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Pumice Powder, and Sunflower Seed Wax to promote the exfoliation of dry, dead, and dull skin cells, allowing new, glowing skin to surface. Then follow with a good body lotion like Softness Bliss Body Lotion to say goodbye to dry dull ashy skin.
The next morning do a mini detox with green tea. "Green tea is great for rehabbing your skin because it's anti-inflammatory," says Fusco. "And try drinking more water than you usually would for 48 to 72 hours after big holiday meals. It'll dilute the sugar and salt in your system, so your skin won't react so strongly."
Good luck out there.
